- Water plants before planting.
- Space plants approximately 1 foot apart.
- Dig a hole slightly larger than the plant. Place plant at soil level and firm soil around it.
- Water thoroughly.
- Mulch: Apply 1 - 2 inches or organic mulch around the plant, leaving 2 inches from the plant stem.
- Avoid fertilizing. Native plants do better in lean soil.
- Protect Plants: Until your plants become established consider protecting them from rabbits with individual plant cages.
Pollinator Kits
Pollinator packs are still available to purchase from the Township of Cavan Monaghan. Buying a pollinator pack is an efficient way to boost your garden's health while supporting critical local ecosystems. These pre-mixed sets of seeds or plants are specifically designed to provide a continuous food supply and habitat for essential species like bees, butterflies, and humming birds.
Each pack is $40/each and will include 10 two year old plants as well as an information package of educational material on benefits of each plant, care guide and planting guide.
There are three available options for:
- sun
- shade
- boulevard.

- Check soil moisture daily, keeping it consistently moist for the first few weeks, and water regularly for the first 8 weeks to establish roots.
- Less is more when maintaining native plants. Leave plants over winter to provide food and shelter for birds, insects, and other wildlife. Wait until late May for a minimal garden cleanup.
