Sending a Student Away to School?

Make Fire Safety Part of the Move.

Before signing a lease or moving into student housing, take a few minutes to check for essential fire safety features.

  • Working smoke alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas
  • Carbon monoxide alarms where required
  • Clear, accessible exits and escape routes
  • Safe electrical systems with enough outlets
  • Fire safety plans and emergency procedures
  • Windows and doors that open easily in an emergency

Students should also know the basics:

  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking
  • Keep space heaters away from anything that can burn
  • Never leave candles unattended
  • Avoid overloaded electrical outlets
  • Plan two ways out of every room whenever possible

A safe home means peace of mind for students and parents.
