Garden suites are a temporary way to add a living space in the Township of Cavan Monaghan.

What is a garden suite?

Garden suites are a temporary way to add a living space typically used for relatives.

These are some requirements for a garden suite

  • A maximum of one garden suite is allowed per lot
  • It is temporary in nature
  • It is designed to be moveable
  • It is not attached to the main dwelling
  • It must only be used on a property with an existing dwelling
  • It is self-contained for living in, complete with power, water and sewage
  • If the lot is serviced by a well and septic system, the garden suite must use the same system
  • It uses the same driveway as the principal dwelling
  • There must be a minimum of one parking space provided for the suite

Steps to take

  1. Contact the Planning department to make sure the garden suite will meet all the requirements of the Zoning By-laws.
  2. Decide where the garden suite will go and draw a site plan.
  3. Follow all directions from the Planning department.
  4. Apply for a Building Permit and submit it along with all the required documents.
