Maintenance

The Township of Cavan Monaghan Public Works Departments organizes summer and winter maintenance operations for roadways and sidewalks.

 Summer Maintenance Operations

Summer maintenance generally occurs between May 1 and October 31. There are a number of operations that the Public Works Department completes during the summer season. Some of these summer operations include:

  • Roadside maintenance (mowing, ditching, shouldering)
  • Street sweeping
  • Resurfacing (surface treatment, asphalt paving, slurry seal)
  • Gravelling
  • Dust control
  • Culvert replacement
  • Re-grading
  • Miscellaneous road repairs

Road system and work are set out on a biweekly basis for ongoing maintenance.

 Winter Maintenance Operations

Winter maintenance generally occurs between November 1 and April 30. The Township of Cavan Monaghan is responsible for sanding, salting, plowing and snow removal operations for its roads and sidewalks. The major objectives for the winter maintenance operations program are:

  • Reduce the hazards of winter road, street, and sidewalk conditions to motorists and pedestrians
  • Reduce economic loss to the community and industry caused by inability for people to access the workplace
  • Facilitate the handling of emergencies by fire, police, ambulance, and officials
  • Maintain safe, passable school bus routes

The policy of the Municipality is to sand during freeze-thaw cycles. Snow plowing occurs after snow accumulation reaches a level of 8 cm. The Township's call-out process includes a start time between 4:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., and routes will be completed within 4-5 hours. Priority is given to school bus routes and high-traffic volume roadways.
