Lakelands Public Health Advising of Potential Chickenpox (Varicella) Exposure at PRHC

May 14, 2026

Lakelands Public Health is notifying the public of a potential exposure to chickenpox (varicella) at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) on May 11-12, 2026.

Individuals who visited the emergency department at PRHC between 1738 hrs (5:38pm) on May 11th - 0756 hrs (7:56am) on May 12th may have been exposed to chickenpox.

Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It is now rare since the vaccine was introduced. Symptoms typically include fever, tiredness, and an itchy rash that develops into fluid-filled blisters. Symptoms often appear 14 to 16 days after exposure.

Most people with chickenpox infection or who have received two doses of varicella vaccine are protected. However, certain individuals are at increased risk of a severe illness, including:

  • Infants under one year of age
  • Pregnant individuals who are not immune
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • Individuals who have never had chickenpox infection or have not been vaccinated

Lakelands Public Health is advising anyone who may have been exposed during the identified timeframe to monitor for symptoms until June 1st - 2nd [21 days post exposure].

If symptoms develop such as fever or rash:

  • Stay home and avoid contact with others, especially vulnerable individuals;
  • Contact a healthcare provider before attending in person so precautions can be taken; and
  • Call ahead before visiting a clinic, urgent care, or emergency department.

Most healthy adults over the age of 50 have been exposed to chickenpox and have natural immunity. Individuals who are unsure whether they are immune to chickenpox or who may be at higher risk for complications are encouraged to speak with their healthcare provider or contact Lakelands Public Health.
