The Township of Cavan Monaghan reminds residents that open fires, fire pits, and makeshift structures are not permitted on Township-owned property. Staff and Council have recently received concerns about unauthorized fire pits and structures in forested areas, which pose a serious risk to nearby homes, natural spaces, and public safety.

Residents are also reminded that trespassing on private property is prohibited.

“Fires must never be lit in wooded areas, near dry vegetation, or within makeshift shelters or structures as they post a serious fire hazard, especially during periods of hot, dry weather,” says Fire Chief Bill Balfour. “Constructing "forts," shelters, or other structures using trees, branches, or other combustible materials can create dangerous fire conditions and may damage natural areas”.

Cutting or damaging trees on public or private property without permission is prohibited.  Anyone who observes unauthorized fires, fire hazards, or unsafe activity should report it to Peterborough Police.  In an emergency, call 9-1-1 immediately.

With summer heat and dry conditions, even a small fire can spread quickly and threaten homes, forests, wildlife, and neighbouring properties. Residents are asked to be vigilant and help protect our community by respecting fire regulations and property boundaries.
