Township invites community to Open House celebrating rehabilitation of historic Old Millbrook School

The Township of Cavan Monaghan invites residents, community partners and visitors to attend an Open House on September 17 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to showcase the completed rehabilitation project at the historically designated Old Millbrook School.

The Old Millbrook School is a long-standing community hub located in downtown Millbrook and is home to important community, cultural and social services, including the Millbrook Branch Library, EarlyON Child and Family Centre, Peterborough Social Services (Millbrook HUB), Millbrook & District Food Share and the latest tenant, The Millbrook and Cavan Historical Society. The rehabilitation project supports the continued use of the 140-year-old heritage facility while improving accessibility, comfort, energy efficiency and long-term sustainability.

The project was supported through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), a cost-shared infrastructure funding program between the Township of Cavan Monaghan and the federal and provincial governments. The total funding for the project was $511,750 with $204,700 coming from the federal government, $170,566.27 coming from the provincial government and $136,483.73 from the Township.

Project improvements included upgraded accessible doors, entranceway and railing repairs, replacement of aging windows with energy-efficient alternatives, ventilation and air conditioning upgrades, roof replacement, hardwood floor replacement in main areas, and corrective work on walls and ceilings. The work was guided by the Municipal Revitalization and Heritage Advisory Committee to ensure improvements remained consistent with the building’s heritage character.

“The Old Millbrook School has served generations of residents, and this rehabilitation project helps ensure it can continue serving our community for years to come,” said Mayor Matthew Graham. “We are grateful for the federal and provincial support that made these accessibility, energy-efficiency and preservation improvements possible.”

Residents are encouraged to drop in during the Open House to tour the building, learn more about the rehabilitation work and see how this historic facility continues to support library, cultural, social and community services in Millbrook.

Event details: September 17, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Old Millbrook School, 1 Dufferin Street, Millbrook.
