Notice to Residents: Multi-Day Heat Event

A multi-day heat event is expected to bring daytime temperatures of 34–36°C, with humidex values in the low-to-mid 40s. Residents are encouraged to take precautions to stay cool, stay hydrated, and check in on family, friends, neighbours, and anyone who may be more vulnerable during extreme heat.

How to stay safe

  • Drink plenty of water, even before you feel thirsty.
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activities and, where possible, schedule them for cooler parts of the day.
  • Spend time in a cool or air-conditioned place. The Cavan Monaghan Community Centre will be open
    • 7am to 11pm Monday through Friday (10pm on Canada Day)
    • 6am to 12pm Saturday and Sunday.
    • Splash pad at the CMCC is open daily from 9am to dusk
    • Millbrook and Bruce Johnston Libraries (see website for hours of operation: https://cavanmonaghanlibraries.ca/
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing and use sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses when outdoors.
  • Take cool showers or baths to help lower body temperature.
  • Never leave people or pets in a parked vehicle.

Check on those at higher risk

Extreme heat can affect everyone, but infants and young children, older adults, people who are pregnant, people with chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers, people who live alone, and people without reliable access to cool spaces may be at increased risk. Please check in regularly with those who may need extra support.

Know the signs of heat illness

Symptoms of heat-related illness can include dizziness, fainting, nausea or vomiting, headache, rapid breathing or heartbeat, extreme thirst, heavy sweating, confusion, or a very high body temperature. If someone shows signs of heat stroke, including confusion, loss of consciousness, or a very high body temperature, call 911 immediately and begin cooling the person while waiting for help.
